It maintains killing power out to 1000 yards for buffalo, but that basically requires aiming many feet above the target's head, so it's best used in thick woods or brush, not open plains.

Trajectory and range are compromised, but lighter bullets aren't horrible, and their weight is close to a heavy 308 450 Bushmaster - Edge on velocity with light bullets, edge on availability. Loses more energy at range than 308 or 458 SOCOM 6.5 Grendel - Velocity and trajectory close to a 308.
Dec 22, 2022 · But unless something boxed me into 450 BM (ie straight wall hunting regs, availability, compatibility, or other) I would prefer 458 Socom as the larger bore super/sub round. You get half again the weight in the subsonic bullet, headspace on the shoulder, and more taper for feeding and extraction.
Jun 6, 2025 · Got all the parts in, besides the barrel nut and handguard, for the second 458 upper build. Blasted and cerakoted the reciever, then swapped the charging handle from the Sfar for a larger one and stuck the 458 bolt in the new carrier.
Jul 1, 2008 · Regardless, kind of makes that '.458 SOCOM has better bullet choices' kind of moot. Had I planned things better I would have tested velocity at 20', 16' and 12' using the same Bushmaster barrel but in my haste I chopped the barrel to 12'.
Oct 28, 2012 · The .458 SOCOM is an awesome round. My buddy has an SBR in .458 SOCOM and it is a handy thumper. Been toying with getting one myself. Ammo is an issue. If your not rich I hope your a handloader. Pretty much the same with the 6.5 Grendel. With the grendel you need special mags as well I believe.

Jan 21, 2004 · Why does the 450 BM cause feeding problems with 20 round magazines but the .458 SOCOM doesn't? I've had zero feeding issues with the five BM magazines that I have, and that includes two 9-round and three 5-round. That said, I'm thinking about buying five Lancer magazines and swapping followers with the five BM magazines.
